WHAT’s New In the City Clerks Department:

 – By

The City Clerk Department has been working on the 2021 property tax assessment appeals and has recently submitted the Local Board of Equalization's recommendations to Pennington and Meade counties.  We've also been assisting the other departments in preparing for the City's annual audit and began working on preparations and tasks for the upcoming municipal election on June 8, 2021.

WHAT's New In Engineering:

 – By

The Box Elder Engineering Division in cooperation with the Pennington County is re-applying for a planning grant thru the BUILD grant program.  Last years application made it to the Secretary of Transportations desk for final review before it fell out.  We feel we have a very viable project that should get strong consideration this year.  If awarded the planning grant it will move the City one step closer to applying for the BUILD construction grant which would allow reconstruction of Radar Hill Road and the 14/16 HWY.

A project that has already under contract for this year is a water main replacement project on Radar Hill Road.  Projects that will be let for bids for 2021 include a project funded thru the SD DOT for sidewalk from the schools, the corner of Briggs and Patriot, to Ellsworth and south on Ellsworth to the Cimmarron Mall, a new water well along 150th north of 225th, and normal street maintenance projects of cracksealing, chip sealing, striping, and pot hole patching.  Several developments are preparing plans for their next phases.

Citizens may have noticed the heavy equipment doing earthwork on the vacant land at the southeast corner of the LIberty / Ellsworth intersection.  This is the site for the Liberty Plaza development which will be the home for a new City / Ellsworth Air Force Base recreational facility, mutliple commercial development lots, and a large residential housing area.

For 2022 planning, another TA Sidewalk Grant application will be submitted to the SD DOT and numerous applications for water and sewer grants for improvements will be submitted to the SD DENR.

WHAT's New In Streets:

The Streets Department has begun to come out of their seasonal snow removal operations and is shifting gears into their preventive maintenance schedules. They have completed evaluating all the gravel roads within city limits and are moving forward in repairing those in need of repair. Additionally, signage throughout the city is being evaluated and repaired while others on the team are identifying newly acquired city lots in need of debris removal and cleanups.
